DESCRIPTION In conversations regarding the behemoths in the field of art over the last few centuries, Raja Ravi Varma stands atop the list of God’s Own Country’s finest stalwarts. Born in 1848, Raja Ravi Varma belonged to the Kilimanoor Palace of Travancore, where signs of his genius were observed at a young age. The very walls of the palace were his canvas, and it is here from here that the masterpieces of the future were first glimpsed. Scholars rave about his ability to realistically depict the fragility, emotions and vulnerability of humans and other characters. Today, a large collection of his work can be seen at the Sree Chithra Art Gallery. The gallery is located in the Napier Museum compound, Thiruvananthapuram, and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on all days except Mondays. Step inside for a riveting display, from Raja Ravi Varma to Roerich, works from Mughal, Rajput and Tanjore Schools of Art, pieces from the Ajanta and Bagh Caves, and an oriental collection from China, Japan, Tibet and Bali.
